Alison Campion is an Advanced Midwifery Practitioner (AMP) and Professional Midwifery Advocate (PMA).
As an AMP she is a role model for advanced clinical practice. In her PMA role she supports and guides other midwives so that they can deliver consistent, high quality, safe maternity care and also to support the women and families.
“As midwives we are advocates for women's needs within the healthcare system, making sure their preferences and concerns are heard and respected during maternity care, labour and postnatal care.
"We provide information to pregnant mums covering a wide variety of topics such as nutrition and mental health. This educational support can have a really positive impact on the health of mums and babies. I see my role as helping them to make informed decisions so they can have better health outcomes.
"All midwives are committed to keeping our skills and knowledge up to date. There are opportunities to develop our skills further, such as training to become an advanced midwifery practitioner or moving into management, teaching or clinical research. As a professional midwifery advocate, I work as part of a team alongside obstetricians, anaesthetists and other maternity team members, and train other staff to provide safer and more effective care.
"Being a midwife requires considerable commitment and empathy, as we sometimes face emotionally challenging situations. But where there are challenges there are also rewards, as midwives we can make a real, positive difference in the lives of others.”
