Smoking in pregnancy- why should you quit and what support will you receive?
Did you know there are over 5000 harmful chemicals in a single cigarette and there is no safe level of smoking during pregnancy.
Quitting smoking during pregnancy will benefit both you and your baby. You are less likely to have a small for gestational age baby, a premature baby & it will reduce the chances of having a stillborn baby. Second-hand smoke is also harmful to your growing baby.
It's never too late to quit. We have a dedicated Smoking in Pregnancy Team who can support you and we will contact you once you have self-referred to register your pregnancy.
We can refer you to our pregnancy stop smoking advisor (ABL) and they will contact you to arrange an appointment. This appointment will be arranged within 5 working days of the referral.
We can provide you with nicotine replacement therapy (NRT) to support your quit journey and ease your cravings for cigarettes. We also offer an incentive scheme to encourage you to quit, where you will receive Love2shop vouchers when you quit smoking and for as long as you remain quit during pregnancy and after giving birth.
You will have a dedicated pregnancy advisor that you can contact if you need support between your appointments, for example if you are struggling with cravings and urges to smoke or if you need a further supply of NRT. Help is also available for partners who would like to quit smoking. Please ask your midwife about stopping smoking or contact our stop smoking service on 0151 541 5656 for more information or support.
