After having a baby, contraception is not always the first thing on your mind, but many women are surprised to hear they can become pregnant again from as early as 21 days after giving birth, even if they are breastfeeding or their periods haven’t returned.
That’s why it’s important to think about contraception early, so you can plan what’s right for you and your family.
There are many health professionals across Wirral who can offer advice and support.
Midwifery
Midwives support you throughout your pregnancy and beyond, including helping plan your contraception.
Many people don’t realise that fertility can return quickly after birth, and it’s possible to become pregnant again from as early as 21 days.
That’s why it’s important to think about contraception before your baby arrives. During your pregnancy, our midwives can talk through your options and help you choose the method that’s right for you.
Together, we can make a plan and, where possible, arrange for your contraception to be in place before you leave maternity services.
By planning ahead, you can enjoy life with your new baby, knowing you’re protected before those first 21 days.
Health visitor
Your health visitor is here to support you and your family through those early weeks and months with your new baby and that includes talking about contraception.
Contraception is an important conversation for you and your partner. If you’re not sure what’s right for you, we can talk through your options and help you find the information and support you need.
We can signpost you to local services and help you access the contraception that’s best for you, so don’t be afraid to ask. There’s no judgement, just friendly advice and support to help you make the choice that’s right for your family.
