Amala Johnson, Registered Nurse
Amala Johnson came to WUTH from Kerala, India to work on the Surgical Emergency Unit (SEU) in 2022.
She said: “I knew I wanted to go abroad to work, to experience a different culture, and my cousin was already working as an NHS nurse in the UK, so that helped me make my choice about where to go. The fact that I could already speak English was also part of that decision.”
There are many other international nurses working in the hospital, including on the SEU ward, so Amala quickly settled into her new role. “It’s great working at WUTH, they are giving me so many training opportunities. I feel well supported and I can talk about any concerns with the senior nurse in charge on the shift. All the staff here are so nice.
She added: “I feel like I’ve grown so much as a nurse in the last two years. The feedback from patients has been fantastic too. Hearing how much you’re appreciated is one of the best things about being a nurse.”
