Helen Clarry, Histopathology Healthcare Scientist Professional Manager

At school enjoyed science, especially human science, and when I was looking at university courses, I liked the sound of biomedical science (BMS) because it was as much about biology as medicine.

BMS covers four pathology disciplines - histology (the study of tissue), microbiology (the study of microorganisms), biochemistry (the study of the chemical processes in living organisms) and haematology (the study of blood diseases).

During my course I did a placement at WUTH, and when I graduated, a BMS role working in the histopathology lab came up there so I applied and got the job.

Once I started, I knew I had found my passion and never looked back. The study of human tissue is fascinating and I love the hands-on nature of the job. Now I’m the operational manager for the lab but I still have a practical role, studying tissue samples under the microscope.

Unlike some of the other disciplines such as blood sciences, the histology lab operates Monday to Friday during normal working hours, which suits me really well.

I love my job and WUTH provides equal opportunities to all its staff. As a woman I’ve never felt any barriers to progression.
