Better than ever care for our cancer patients

Cancer patients are receiving better care than ever at Wirral University Teaching Hospital according to latest national survey results.

People who were in-patients or day cases in April, May and June last year gave feedback on their experience of cancer care at the Trust’s Arrowe Park and Clatterbridge Hospitals and this has been published in the National Cancer Patient Survey of 2023.

Anonymous feedback sent to the Trust from one patient encapsulated the survey findings and said: “The care I received was excellent in all aspects from my diagnosis to my surgery and my aftercare. The treatment I received from surgical staff at Arrowe Park was outstanding with my welfare being top of their priority throughout my stay.”

In 14 of the questions the Trust scored above the expected range and also had most questions above the expected range out of all Trusts in the Cheshire and Merseyside Cancer Alliance. 

Out of the 60 reported domains 49 questions scored above the national average, two questions were equal to the national average and only nine questions scored below the national average.

Compared to its previous results in 2021, the Trust has seen a significant improvement in patients reporting that cancer research opportunities were discussed with them, increasing from a score of 34% to 41%. This improvement has taken the Trust close to the national average of 43% and reflects the continued hard work to support research across the organisation.

Dawn Miller, Macmillan Lead Cancer Nurse at Wirral University Teaching Hospital, said: “The feedback from patients is so important to us and the latest results highlight that cancer patients are telling us they are receiving outstanding care. We have particularly made great improvements around research and that work will continue.”

Tracy Fennell, Chief Nurse at Wirral University Teaching Hospital, added: “It is very humbling to hear that our cancer patients are having an excellent experience with us from diagnosis and surgery into their recovery. It is so important for us to ensure we are getting this right for our patients and are offering the best possible care.”
