We Join a Global Campaign To End Gender Based Violence
Christmas is meant to be the most wonderful time of the year, but for those experiencing domestic abuse, it can be a frightening and isolating time. The run-up to the festivities with its expectations and additional expenses can be particularly hard.
But domestic abuse isn’t someone else’s problem - it’s everyone’s problem. Which is why Wirral University Teaching Hospital (WUTH) will be actively supporting the 16 Days of Action Against Gender-Based Violence campaign, running from 25th November to 10th December.
This international campaign, initiated by UN Women, aims to unite individuals, communities, and organisations in a stand against violence. By joining this global movement, WUTH reaffirms its commitment to promoting a safe and supportive environment for everyone within the hospital community.
Michelle Beales-Shaw, Named Midwife for Safeguarding Lead Specialist for Domestic Abuse and Harmful Practice at WUTH, said: “Gender-based violence is, unfortunately, a pervasive issue that often leaves a deep and lasting impact on mental and physical health.
“At WUTH, we believe in the right to safety and respect for all our patients, staff, and community members. Supporting this campaign aligns with our core values of compassion, inclusivity, and respect, which guide our commitment to providing a safe space for everyone.”
One domestic abuse survivor, working in the hospital, shared how getting help transformed her life and offered advice to others.
She said: “Please know that you are not alone, there are people and organisations who can support you, without any judgement.
“Once you have accepted that you need help to make things better and safer for yourself there are plenty of agencies who will help you. I was surprised at how many agencies helped me.
“Without the right support I wouldn’t be where I am today. My life is so much safer, happier and brighter now.”
Throughout these 16 days, WUTH will be sharing resources, supporting local events and providing information aimed at raising awareness about gender-based violence, recognising the signs, and offering support to staff. One of the key events will be December’s White Ribbon Event, dedicated to raising awareness and pledging to end violence against women.
Michelle added: “By supporting the 16 Days of Action Against Gender-Based Violence, WUTH stands with survivors and advocates for a future free from violence.”
