Gynaecological Cancer Services
The Gynaecological Cancer Team knows a hospital referral for suspected cancer can be very stressful for patients. Our team of doctors, nurses and support staff work to give you the best patient experience during this stressful time.
The good news is that roughly 97 out of 100 people who come to our service do not have cancer. When cancer is found, it is important to us that patients can be diagnosed and treated as quickly as possible.
Referrals are triaged by a Clinical Nurse Specialist to ensure that patients are seen in the most appropriate Urgent Suspected Cancer Clinic setting:
- Unscheduled bleeding clinic (telephone or face-to-face)
- Colposcopy/cervical clinic (face-to-face)
- Vulval clinic (face-to-face)
- Pelvic mass clinic (face-to-face)
- Supporting clinics include: Outpatient Hysteroscopy Clinic, Nurse-led Results Clinics and Consultant-led Oncology Clinics.
There is a webpage about what to expect when you come to the Gynaecological Urgent Suspected Cancer Clinic.
There are other patient information leaflets at the bottom of this page which you may find useful.
Our team will call you with any updates about your tests or treatment.
Although our services are mainly diagnostic for all gynaecological cancers, our team offers treatment for early womb (endometrial) cancers, early cervical cancers and also for less suspicious ovarian cysts. Treatment is otherwise provided by the Regional Cancer Centre Team at one of the following sites:
- Liverpool Women’s Hospital
- Royal Liverpool University Hospital
- Aintree Hospital
- Clatterbridge Cancer Centre

The Gynaecological Cancer Service at Wirral University Teaching Hospital is supported by a team of Clinical Nurse Specialists (CNS) who give support and advice for patients. They may sometimes be referred to as your 'keyworker'.
You can call the CNS Team directly or contact them using the Patient Portal if you have any questions or concerns.
The CNS Team, alongside Cancer Support Workers, will be keen to get to know you as a person and tailor your care to your wishes and preferences.
