Falls Awareness Week: 16 - 20th September, 2024
Falls are a big concern in hospitals, but the good news is that most of them can be prevented. By understanding the risks and taking simple steps, we can keep our patients safe and healthy.
The Truth About Falls
There are many factors that can contribute towards a fall but with the right actions we can try and minimise the risks.
Key Tips to Prevent Falls in hospital:
- Please do not mobilise on your own if you feel you are unable to or have been advised not to – please use your call button for assistance.
- When getting up: sit upright for a few moments on the edge of your bed before standing, get up slowly and make sure you feel steady before walking.
- Drink regularly and eat well.
- If you feel dizzy – stop, sit down, and let the ward staff know.
- Never lean on hospital furniture as it’s often on wheels.
- Make sure your shoes or slippers fit well, grip well and cannot fall off.
- Make sure glasses are clean and used as prescribed. Ask for help if you are having trouble seeing.
- Do some simple leg exercises before getting up from your bed or chair:
- Use your usual walking aid, keep it close by and check for wear and tear on the rubber feet.
By following these safety tips, we aim to reduce falls and improve the care we provide at Wirral University Teaching Hospital. Join us in this important effort to keep our patients safe and well.
