What You Can Do While You’re in Hospital
Do what feels safe for you and follow the advice of your care team.
If you’re able to get out of bed
- Sit out of bed for meals whenever possible
- Get dressed each day in your usual clothes
- Walk to the bathroom with support if needed
- Take short walks around the ward if you have been told it’s safe
- Use your walking aid – tell us if you normally use one at home
If you cannot leave the bed
You can still stay active safely.
- Change your position regularly
- Do gentle exercises in bed or a chair (ask the staff for an exercise sheet)
- Keep mentally active by reading, listening to music, puzzles or activities
- Let us know if you’re uncomfortable or would like help to move

Eating and Drinking
Sitting upright to eat helps with:
- Digestion
- Reducing reflux
- Comfort and appetite
- Reducing pressure on your skin
We will help you sit comfortably and safely at mealtimes.
Feeling Confident About Moving
It’s normal to feel worried about walking or standing after being unwell.
Let us know if you are:
