Support for the Armed Forces Community

Wirral University Teaching Hospital has signed the Armed Forces Covenant to show our commitment towards our Armed Forces Communities.

We are proud to have been named as a Veteran Aware Trust for the first time in 2023 by the Veterans Covenant Healthcare Alliance (VHCA) in recognition of our commitment to improving NHS care for veterans, reservists, members of the Armed Forces and their families.

We understand the many and complex challenges that the armed forces community and their relatives can face, and we strive to deliver services with understanding, sensitivity, and support.

We have dedicated armed forces (AF) leads who champion armed forces community issues across the organisation and we collaborate with local and national organisations.

  • Dr Richard Guy, Consultant in Emergency Medicine and AF Clinical Lead
  • Johanna Ashworth-Jones - Programme Developer: Patient Experience & Nurse Quality Indicators – AF Management Lead for patients
  • Sharon Landrum, Workforce Engagement and Inclusion Lead – AF Management Lead for Workforce
  • Mark Chidgey – Chief Finance Officer and AF Staff Network Executive Partner

Working for us

Wirral University Teaching Hospital has been awarded the Employers Armed Forces Covenant Bronze Award in recognition of its efforts in supporting the armed forces community, ex-armed forces, reservists and their families into work in the NHS and fostering a welcoming environment.

We already have many highly valued members of the armed forces working within our organisation and we recognise the benefits of the skills, training and experience that ex-armed forces and reservists bring to their work. We are trying new ways to identify and support our armed force community to join us here at Wirral University Teaching Hospital and would be keen for you to apply for one of our many employment opportunities.

Further information and support

We work closely with other local NHS service providers, commissioners and local charities to share news, events or service information, specifically for armed forces community, veterans and their families https://padlet.com/Cheshire_Merseyside_Veterans/Military_Veterans

Posters attached below also contain lots of helpful information and support contacts.

We have also established a new armed forces staff network and would love to link up with you and hear more about your experiences; provide and receive support and capture your ideas for further improvements and to celebrate with us at various events too!
