What is the study about?

A research study to find out if an alternative airway system is better than standard care for patients connected to a breathing machine

Who can take part?

Patients admitted to a CCU in the UK who are:
• Aged 18 years or more
• Need for invasive mechanical ventilation
• Are expected by the critical care team to remain ventilated for at least 24 hours
Relatives will be approached by medical team as patient is not able to decide for themself.

What is involved?

If you take part, you will be randomised by chance in two groups:
In PROTECT AIRWAYS – alternative airway system, a type of tube that connects critically ill patients to a breathing machine, will be used for intubation.
If you are in the standard care group, you will continue to receive standard NHS tube for intubation.
After leaving hospital, we will also ask you to complete a questionnaire about your recovery at 2- and 6-month time-points.
