Wirral University Hospital NHS Foundation Trust

We understand this may be a very difficult time. Caring for, or being present with, someone who is nearing the end of their life can be physically and emotionally demanding and we want you to know that support is available for you, not just your loved one.

This page covers staying with your loved one, practical support available in the hospital, accommodation for relatives, looking after your own wellbeing, and bereavement support.

Staying with your loved one

In line with the principles of John's Campaign, you are welcome to spend time with your loved one, including outside standard visiting hours where appropriate. Overnight stays may be possible.

Support may include:

  • Blankets
  • Reclining chairs on some wards
  • A truckle bed

Being involved in your loved one's care

At such a sensitive time, you may wish to be involved in a practical way. If you feel able to take part in giving care - for example, by giving drinks, helping with mouth care, or simply sitting and talking our teams will support you to do this.

Equally, you do not have to take part if you would rather not, or if it feels too difficult, there is no right or wrong way to be present, and our staff will never expect more of you than you are able to give.

Accommodation for relatives

A dedicated flat is available within the staff accommodation block. It includes:

  • Three separate lockable bedrooms (keys provided)
  • A shared communal area
  • Space for multiple families at once

Who can use the flat

  • Primarily families of patients on the palliative care caseload
  • Occasionally offered to Women's and Children's Services when their accommodation is full
  • Prioritised for families who have travelled from outside the Wirral (local families supported in some cases)

How to access the flat

  • Speak to the ward team or palliative care staff if you need accommodation
  • A member of staff will access the relatives' flat file and provide the required form
  • You will be asked to complete a short form covering fire safety guidance and basic instructions for using the flat
  • Once the form is completed, hospital switchboard will issue the keys for the flat and the allocated bedroom
  • When you no longer need the accommodation, please return the keys by posting them into the box at the staff accommodation reception

Practical support in the hospital

Car parking

Free of charge car parking is available for relatives of patients receiving end-of-life care. Please ask the ward team if you need support.

Comfort packs

Comfort packs may be available for relatives staying with a loved one. Provision is based on individual need and availability. Packs may include refreshments or essential personal care items.

Please speak to the ward team if you feel you would benefit from this support.

Looking after your own wellbeing

It is easy, when caring for or supporting someone you love, to put your own needs last. But your wellbeing matters too - both for your own sake, and because it helps you to be there for your loved one.

  • Tell ward staff if you are finding things difficult they are there to support you, not just your loved one
  • If you are visiting with other family or friends, consider taking it in turns to be at the bedside, so everyone has the chance to rest
  • Let friends or family help with practical things like childcare, pets, or everyday tasks at home
  • Make sure your phone is charged you are likely to be making and receiving a lot of calls from family and friends during this time
  • Talking to someone a friend, family member, chaplain, or member of staff can help, even when it feels difficult
