Deaf Awareness

We curated Deaf Awareness resource packs in our Trust in July 2023 for teams/departments to promote inclusivity and accessibility.

The pack includes an array of resources such as instructional videos on basic British Sign Language (BSL) signs, training materials available online, communication tips, guidance on setting up communication alerts, as well as posters designed to facilitate interpreter or translator bookings.

We hope that these resources will be valuable in fostering a more inclusive work environment and empowering staff to effectively communicate with colleagues, patients, carers or visitors who are D/deaf or hard of hearing.

Communication Tips:

Are you looking for ways to communicate more effectively with someone who has hearing difficulties?

Here are some tips to make the process smoother:

• Attract their attention before you start speaking.
• Keep your face visible and well-lit.
• Speak clearly and avoid shouting or over-mouthing.
• Use full sentences and avoid unnecessary hand movements.
• Be patient and repeat yourself if necessary.
• Consider writing down important information.
• Ensure they are aware of the subject matter before you continue speaking if they are lip reading.

By following these tips, you can help make communication easier for those with hearing difficulties. Let's all work together to improve our communication skills and make the world a more inclusive place!
